What is Recreational Play?

Levels of Play
Water Volleyball play is divided into two segments Recreational and Competitive play.  Recreational play is LEVELS 1 thru 3.  Competitive are LEVELs 4 to 6.  Recreational levels are played with a mix of GREEN softer ball and BLUE firmer ball.   Play is not as fasted paced and ball speeds are lower.

Competitive play uses the BLUE ball which is harder but allows for better control and better play action.  Each level of competitive has increasing ball speed and ball spiking becomes very high speed at the top levels.

Recreational Play Levels

LEVEL 1 – New Players to water volleyball start here. Players can stay at this level s long as they wish and enjoy fun and commodity of this level. This level is played with the GREEN Ball which is softer and a bit more responsive which makes learning volleyball skills a little easier and a bit safer.

After 30 days a player may move up at their request to LEVEL 2 where their skills will be assessed and the person can be mentored. Should the mentors agree, the player will continue to play LEVEL 2. If the mentors think a player needs more time to acquire skills, they may move back to LEVEL 1 to continue to build skills.

NOTE: Mentors are not only evaluating a player’s skills but a player’s safety. Water Volleyball can be a fast-paced game. Mentors want to make sure you are alert enough to avoid an energetic pass or spiked ball. Also, they want to make sure that a player is not hitting the ball so hard that other players are put at risk.

LEVEL 2 – A more competitive level of play but with a recreational fun feel.  Play uses the GREEN Ball to make it easier to build skills and avoid injury. Mentoring is required to enter this level.  Players can continue to play at this level as long as they wish.

After 60 days at LEVEL 2 a player may, but is not required to, request moving to LEVEL 3.  LEVEL 3 is played with the BLUE Ball which is much harder and less bouncy.  But the BLUE Ball adds additional opportunity to build ball control.  A Mentor will need to evaluate your play for your safety before you move up.

LEVEL 3 – Is an exciting level where recreational play and competitive play come together.  Player can, but are not required to, sign up to play on teams to get a feel for competitive water volleyball play.

Players may stay at this level as long as they wish.  If a player wishes to move up, there are twice a year tryout.  Level 5 and 6 players will evaluate a player’s readiness to play at LEVEL 4 and will rank the top LEVEL 3 players.  The Top 4 players will move up to LEVEL 4 where they will continue to compete for a position during the LEVEL 4 rankings.
